The Audition Process
For anyone currently living in Austin who is interested in auditioning for KDH Dance Company, the first step is to take Kathy’s Advanced/Professional class on Wednesday nights on a consistent basis at Café Dance. Then, let her know that you are interested in being considered for a spot in the company.
While she generally works with a small group of company dancers, Kathy often hires pick-up dancers for various choreographic projects, so it is in your favor to take her dance classes, practice her choreography and experience her aesthetic vision on a regular basis.
If you are traveling from out of town and wish to audition for the company, please contact shari@kdhance.com. Shari will set a specific audition date and process for you.
What Kathy Looks For
Kathy hires professional dancers who have excellent modern dance technique as well as experience in improvisation, contact improv, partnering and choreography. Beyond those basics, she considers the following: What can this dancer contribute to the company? Does this dancer inspire her to be a better choreographer? Does he or she motivate the other dancers to be better dancers? Is the dancer confident, self-motivated, self-disciplined and committed to the ongoing process of physical training? Is the dancer easy to work with? Are they a good roommate for tours?
The Company’s Schedule
KDH Dance Company works a 10 month contract: September-June. Company dancers are required to take a minimum of two to three dance classes per week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) and rehearse Tuesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. The company typically performs three to four times per year and hosts two fundraisers. Company dancers are paid a small stipend at the end of the month, ten months out of the year. |
