THE AUDITION PROCESS

Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company does not hold typical annual auditions.

Because we work collaboratively on creating original dances, it takes more than a couple of hours for me to determine if a dancer is right for KDH and if KDH is the right place for a particular dancer. Being a wonderful dancer is just the beginning. Let’s assume you already have advanced level modern dance technique, ballet training, experience in improvisation, choreography, contact improvisation, partnering, and a deep curiosity for movement. There’s more.

I hire a diverse group of dancers who translate sounds, noises, squiggles, lurches, hops, silences, stares and other tortured attempts at communication and turn them into movements that exceed my wildest expectations.
I look for dancers who sense subtle shifts in air pressure, weight, and temperature and use this information to their advantage. I want to work with dancers who are at the top of their game, meaning they realize there is still much to learn through investigation in class, in rehearsal, and in personal practice.

It’s imperative that my dancers trust me deeply enough that I can come into the studio everyday and fail as many times as necessary in order to find the right answer.

Dancers with a strong desire to join KDH should begin the audition process by taking my Professional Modern Dance Class on a consistent basis on Thursdays from 12:45-2:00 at Café Dance. Let me know that you would like to be considered for the dance company.

Merde,
Kathy
