We were in the middle of a creativity session
at Crockett High School when tornadoes threatened outside. We were
trapped in our room for six hours! We played games, hid under tables
with pillows over our heads and danced to pass the time and to
push the fear away until we were free to go home. This experience
was the catalyst for our culminating project. We called ourselves
The100% Weather Ensemble, and our performance combined rhythmic
snapping fingers to simulate rain, flashing lights and movement
studies involving leadership, cooperation and trust.
“
Creativity Circle”, a component of New Art Kinnections, is
for high school students who want to participate in the creative
process, learn about the elements
of
design and produce a culminating performance of movement, music,
text and visual art. Our vision is to help each student integrate
art into his or her daily life, to take the lessons learned in
a creative environment and translate them into a more positive
way of life. While tapping into the creative process, Director
Barbara Jo Stetzelberger, LCSW, DTR, helps students identify
and safely express their thoughts and feelings. Students learn
the importance of the arts for the maintenance of a safe and culturally
diverse society. Through this program, we hope to effect profound
and long-term changes in perceptions, attitudes and actions.
